The Impossible Bridge!

Milli, Lily, Isla R, Olive, Ruby and Saffron read a book last week called the Impossible Bridge. They were given the task of making a bridge that would go between two tables. The girls worked tirelessly to complete this amazing construction.

Ice Cream Making in Inaka

Last week as part of our Cause and Effect work the New Entrant class made strawberry ice cream.

First we poured strawberry milk into a small zip lock bag, this bag was then placed into a larger zip lock bag that was filled with ice and salt.

The salt melted the ice and caused the milk to change from a liquid to a solid - or from milk to ice cream.

Then the class wrote invites to Mrs Worner to come and taste the ice cream.

Mrs Worner thought the ice cream
was scrumptious.

Cause and Effect - Science experiments

Friday finished off with two different experiments. No Carbon dioxide gas this time!
Austin had made different colours of slime using borax, water and a secret ingredient. It was gloriously sticky and gooey.
Isla had whizzed up a red cabbage with water and she had this purple mixture in different jars. The red cabbage is an indicator that will turn a different colour for an acid and a base. When she put in baking soda, it turned green for a base. When Isla put in vinegar, it turned pink for an acid. It was amazing that when we put the acid and the base together, it went back to the purple cabbage colour. Wow!

Not a volcano today - a coke gieser!!!!!
Xavier had made a little hole in the cap of a bottle of coke zero. He had mentos strung on a wire. When the wire was pulled out, the mentos dropped in and the coke shot up in the air like a gieser.
Luckily, we did the experiment outside.
Islah S dropped blobs of food colouring into water, then into milk.
We found out the colours stayed in the milk, but they all mixed together in the water
Jesse showed us his poster about the Colour wheel. He showed us how to make orange, purple and green and talked about the primary colours of blue, red and yellow.

Piper created an experiment in a jar - she poured food colouring and water into a jar with a little oil. The oil went through the coloured water and is floating on the top!
Abigail showed us a different version of Theo's egg shell eggsperiment. She had two jars of vinegar - one with a cooked egg inside, and one with a raw egg. We are waiting for a few days to see what happens.

Oliver showed us static electricity with 2 balloons, a wooly jumper and an empty can. he rubbed the balloons on his hair (and Mrs Wells' hair) and then tried to put them together. The balloons were supposed to move away from each other - just like 2 magnets. When he held the balloon over an empty can, it made the can move a little on the table.
James made raisins dance by putting them in a glass of lemonade. The raisins sank to the bottom, then they were covered in bubbles and floated to the top. We heard the bubbles were carbon dioxide.
What a lot of experiments have used carbon dioxide!

This week started with a bunch of flowers. Iva showed us where water travels inside a flower stem. She put 3 carnations into water coloured with blue, red and black food colouring. Later in the day, we could see the colour appearing at the edges of the petals.
Nathaniel made a bubble car. He had a plastic bottle with a straw stuck out of the end. He wrapped baking soda in a paper towel and poured vinegar into the bottle. We think the paper stopped the vinegar reacting quickly with the soda as the boat moved slowly through the water.

Definitely the week of the explosions!
We had to move out onto the field for Lily's experiment. She had a bottle of Diet Coke and a whole packet of Mentos lollies.
I was expecting a shower of frothy bubbles to explode out of the bottle.
The bubbles came out of the top, but not as fast as we had expected.

An exploding volcano and a lava lamp.
Dustin put water with food coloring into a jar, then poured oil on the top. When he dropped in a fizzy tablet, little blobs of red cam floating to the surface - just like in a lava lamp.
Ethan S made a fabulous model of a volcano. He used baking soda and vinegar to create lava. So exciting!

Week Two and the Amazing experiments keep appearing.  I am so pleased with the way the children have all their equipment and how they can talk about their experiments so well.
On Monday, Emily created the wonderful smell of fresh bread in the class by mixing warm water, yeast and sugar in a bottle. Emily put a balloon over the neck of the bottle. The yeast and sugar created a chemical reaction - lots of frothy bubbles and the balloon inflated. Luckily Mrs Wells took the balloon off before the mixture exploded everywhere.
Oscar had made a propeller car out of some plastic bottles. When you turned the propeller, it wound up the plastic bands. Letting the car go on a table, the car zoomed right to the end .... and off!!!!
Tuesday was the day the two Bens were scientists. Ben A put baking soda into a balloon, then stretched the balloon over the neck of a bottle filled with a little vinegar. The chemical reaction caused the balloon to inflate. Isla R knew that the gas was called Carbon Dioxide and that we breathe out CO2. It was interesting seeing the bubbles go back down again when the baking soda was all finished up.
Ben C also used baking soda but he put it into some coke. We were all wondering if it would have the same reaction as the vinegar.
It did!!!!!!!!

Walking Water and a disappearing egg!
You won't believe it but Tessa actually made water walk in the classroom today. She had 4 cups full of water and 3 empty ones at the start. After putting paper towels inbetween, the water has walked over into the empty cups. Having different colours in each cup made it easier to see and it is also showing us how colours mix together.
Theo put an egg gently into a jar of vinegar. He tells us that, tomorrow, the shell will have disappeared! We can see lots of bubbles around the egg shell at the moment.
Can't wait till tomorrow.

Meg made Ice-cream
and Toby made a hovercraft.
Once again, our class scientists were amazing. Meg's ice-cream was made in the classroom with some flavoured milk, 2 ziplock bags, salt and a lot of shaking!!  Yum!

Toby created a hovercraft with a balloon and card. see the photos of it shooting across the table.

Wow!!!!!!

Miriama and Ethan K were amazing scientists today showing us Cause and Effect with science.
Miriama put salt into water to make an egg float.
Ethan mixed milk with Red Bull - the milk went all funny and hard.
Well done for the fabulous explanations.

We can't wait for the next experiments tomorrow!!!!!!!
